The Herdwick sheep is the native breed of the Lake District and Cumbria and has a very distinctive smiley face, despite living on wild windswept fells in almost constantly soggy conditions. Herdwicks are unusual in that they are “hefted” which means they have a particular connection to their own “heaf” or fell and pass on this knowledge from one generation to the next - almost never sharing their excellent navigation skills with lost ramblers and fellwalkers.
